As I mentioned in the Quality Over Quantity post: the most common problem is that many of us don’t have durable, well fit basics. Basics are the fundamental pieces in a wardrobe to build a strong look. They are most commonly plain and uncomplicated pieces. They serve us as the playground for our more individual items. Those I call key pieces (or statement pieces) and trend pieces (or fashion pieces). Basics give us the ability to prevent an outfit from looking over the top. They make an outfit look put together as if you know what you’re doing. Everyone can decide which style those basic pieces should have. Even basics can have a certain personal touch. Something like slim or loose fit and thicker or thinner fabric are characteristics in which basics vary. To style your basics up you need your key pieces, as I already mentioned.
Those key pieces (or statement pieces) give you the ability to express your own personal style even more then you do it through your basics. Let’s pretend you have a red, oversized coat which you love, because you often wear reds or colorful clothing. It must not be totally on trend but is just your personal favorite coat in shape and color. That’s what makes up personal style. Something to mention is that your key pieces are influenced by the current fashion of course. This is never avoidable because we’re living in a certain decade and decades are always determined by the nowadays existing fashion. But key pieces aren’t the super exaggerated fashion pieces you see on the catwalks. They only have some aspects from color, cut or shape for example.
Fashion pieces (or trend pieces) follow the current fashion and mostly have no longtime purpose. Those are the pieces which are most similar to the ones you see on the Fashion Weeks in New York, London, Berlin and Milan .
If there ain’t any basics in your look then your wardrobe will mainly consist of key and fashion pieces. This is completely fine because it’s all up to you to create your own personal mix of all three.
