Why I designed Carmen some pants – How it all began.
Two weeks ago I got surprised by the lovely Carmen (IG: @carmushka)! It was friday, when she usually announces her favorite outfit of the week #carmushkaootw. That evening I looked on my mobile phone and saw the surprising message: “Carmushka mentioned you in her Story”. I thought what can it be, that she likes so much? She mentioned, that she likes my pants and my in german called “Adiletten” in that photo I posted the day before. I was and still am really happy about this as you can imagine, because I sewed those pants myself helter-skelter the evening before our trip to Milano. I really decided in the last moment to sew them! I usually don’t like sewing that much, but I wanted to have some pants out of this fabric at least for our trip to take some nice photos there. The idea with the front-sided ruffle trim came up very spontaneously which is what makes those pants a little extraordinary, I think. So I thought why not sew the same pants for Carmen and do her a favor as she did for me?
The fabric issue.
Next day I went to the fabric store were I bought that white fabric with those small black stripes on it. They didn’t have it anymore so I went even further into the city of Hamburg looking in another store for it. After an hour of asking around I still couldn’t find the fabric anymore. I was already so down because, well when I decide to do something I usually do it. So I went all around the store again where I could possibly find a similar fabric which had the same characteristics and similar pattern. The cashiers must have thought: Oh, is she crazy? But the craziness was worth it and I found a pretty fabric which I thought Carmen would also like to wear on her own photos. I really hoped she does! So I bought it.
Now, I am really aware of the fact that my sewing skills are not that brilliant, even though I am studying fashion design. But my boyfriend told me again and again, that I can do it, if I really want to. In the evening after working in the office (yes, it was a sunday..) I started sewing them. I really took my time to get the best out of my little, cheap sewing machine. The serging stitches should at least not fringe. I experienced, that the fabric was not that easily to sew and craft as the one I used for my own pants. The fabric was slightly stretchy which is a little more difficult to sew.
Carmens pants are finished.
After a few days with sewing 2-3 hours each day they were done! So I ironed them again, which is probably what you really learn in a fashion design study aside from sewing. I put them into a box with some pretty packaging (I’m obsessed with pretty packagings) and sent them to Carmen the next day. The first thing I was worrying about was, if they will actually fit her as I didn’t had her exact measurements. The second thing I was worrying about was the fabric getting wrinkes all over it as the pants arrive, packed in this little box, at Carmens home.
Yesterday her pants arrived!
Yesterday Carmen finally got her own designed pants! I was so happy about her reaction! Even though there were plenty of wrinkes in the fabric caused by the transport and as I mentioned my sewing skills are not the best, she was really happy about the pants. That’s what I do this for! And when she put them on they fit very well – I’m so happy having done this for her!
You want to see which pants she got? Carmen already posted a photo and some stories at her Instagram @carmushka. Hope you enjoyed reading – wish you all a wonderful weekend!
